AbstractThe current trend towards lean production asks for a faster product development and production than in the past. Integration and automation of manufacturing systems provides a means of achieving this. However, automation of assembly is currently one of the most difficult tasks in the manufacturing industry because of the complexities of the operations involved as well as the non availability of standard optimization parameters. The system developed (EXAP) identifies component suitability determination and component sequence in assembly, as the major operations to be automated. Domain specific knowledge is implemented through heuristic reasoning in the form ofIF-THEN-ELSE statements. The functionality of this system determines the acceptability/non acceptability of the components based upon geometric comparisons and generates an optimal sequence of the components in the assembly after applying geometric constraints and optimization criteria.
