Abstract | Although it is very well recognized that technology is the major determinant of firm performance, the technological considerations in strategy formulation process are varied. Similarly the scope of the Technology Strategy is limited to strategic management of technical functions. based on the study of various literature on business strategy and technology strategy, the issues and deficiencies in technology strategy are identified. It is hypothesized that the concept of technology content addition which is a function of technology capabilities and the market conditions, is a useful tool to understand the firm performance under varying competitive circumstances and to estimate the long term sustainability of the competitive advantage as well. It is explained how this concept can be incorporated in the framework for Technology Strategy Formulation. The Technology Capabilities which are determining factors for technology content addition, should have certain characteristics to be useful as strategic variables. The various technology capabilities which facilitate technology content addition and which have value contributing potential, and their characteristics are briefly discussed. Transformation Capability which in common parlance is known as Manufacturing Competence, is treated in detail in this study. Based on the study of current literature on Manufacturing competence, the various dimensions of Transformation Capability are identified. It is hypothesized that the level of accumulation of Transformation Capability can be estimated by looking at the way how the manufacturing function interacts with the other internal functions as well as the external elements. What are the nature of response of Transformation function to other functional entities and how the level of accumulation varies with these responses are explained in detail. The different manifestations of the responses and the their relationship to level of accumulation of Transformation Capability understood by looking at the complexities of the organizational and manufacturing processes as well as the complexities of the output i.e. the products. It is proposed that by breaking down the product in to elementary features which are the result of elementary processes, it is possible to understand the complexities of the products and the processes, and the value contribution from different activities or the different elements of transformation capability. |
