Abstract | The analysis of the contributions of each of the functional activities in achieving the firm's objectives are normally limited to non-technological factors that affects operation. In most situations, important technological contributions are overlooked to give way to pressing financial situation that the firm is currently into. This study is an attempt to look at various technological considerations that shape the functional level support toward the achievement of the business strategy, particularly in a Philippine copper smelting firm (PASAR). The analytical framework includes an analysis of the external macro-environment as well as an industry and market situation analyses. This is to establish the existing opportunities for the industry as a whole and to isolate the impending threats. Porter's model on competitive industry analysis is also used as a guiding framework on understanding the various industry forces affecting the operation of the firm. An internal resource capability analysis is undertaken to enable the firm in identifying its inherent strengths and weaknesses. The technology component and capability analyses are conducted on the basis of value chain of the copper smelter for this purpose. The technological considerations from above analyses were integrated in the operation of each functional level activity to suit with four generic business strategies that a firm may pursue such as price-leadership, quality-leadership, niche-leadership, or image-leadership. The finding of the study suggest that a technology-based strategy formulation analyses enable manufacturing enterprises to properly address various technological issues affecting their operation. Additionally, the firm's internal strengths are determined by different combination and interplay between the technology components, i.e., technoware, humanware, inforware, and orgaware, and technology capabilities in the context of a manufacturing firm. |
