Abstract | Among the major industries that have contributed toward making Korea one of the fast industrializing countries, the electronics industry should rank high on the list. Being a 'high-tech' industry, it not only spearheads Korea's export drive, but is also expected to play a leadership role in enhancing the nation's technological capabilities and leading it towards fully industrialized country status by the turn of the century. Of the many successful Korean companies, the history of Samsung Electronics Co.(SEC) is dramatic as it has reached its international status today in only 26 years, operating out of a country where the industrial structure and technological level were still in the fledging stage when it started. With a limited domestic market, achieving high level of sales around the world has been possible only aggressively pursuing export-oriented marketing strategies. Currently, the export ratio of the company is about 60 to 70 percent. SEC also has established many joint venture companies and increased its FDI in countries including the US.A, Canada, Germany, United Kingdom and other countries in Europe. So it is interesting to observe that SEC has managed to become a large and technologically competitive company to be reckoned with world wide in only two decades, especially in the developed countries. This study mainly focuses on issues concerning its technology acquisition methods and motivations for overseas operations in the world. SEC is trying to expand its overseas market through FDI in developed countries. Its motivations to invest in developed countries will be explained by market pull perspective, technology perspective, and factor-advantage perspective. It also uses every possible mean to get sophisticated technologies. Its recent technology acquisition methods from advanced countries include strategic alliances, joint development, company acquisition and R&D activities. |
