Abstract | Migration and remittance have been the engine of the Nepalese economy since the dawn of globalization. Remittance income sent by the migrants account to more than a quarter of the nation's GDP. As there are no other steadfast source of national income, remittance plays an important role in Nepal's economy, especially in denting poverty. But since 2011, migration and remittance growth rate have been experiencing a sharp decline. Once the revenue source slows down, it can have adverse economic ramifications to the poor households who are dependent on remittance. So far, the government has not taken robust steps to remedy the situation. Neither has the economy been armed with policies to productively use remittance nor formulated alternatives to remittance as hub for national income. This paper therefore analyses the role played by migration and remittance in reducing poverty and offers policy recommendation to sustainable course of action before the situation gets worse. |
