Abstract | While a growing attention on environmental concerns have challenged the organizations to change the way of doing businesses, only little is known about how their resources affect green performance. Drawing upon RBV, RDT, and agency theory, the influence of non- financial resources (composition of the board of directors) and financial resources (financial slack, R&D intensity) on green performance is addressed in the study. By employing a novel measure (i.e. green revenue score) as a proxy for green performance and combining two distinctive data sources (Newsweek and publicly-available corporate sources), this study reveals several important findings. Regarding non-financial resources, results suggest a significant U-shaped effect of female representation on green performance. Also, when there are more directors with postgraduate degrees, it lowers the minimum threshold from which higher female representation translates into higher green performance. Regarding financial resources, this study found that financial slack exerts a U-shaped effect on green performance. Furthermore, the results support a positive association between R&D intensity and green performance. Being among the first to find evidence for aU-shaped effect of female board representation and financial slack on green performance; and moderating effect of directors' education level, this study presents important theoretical and practical implications. |
