Abstract | Nepal is garden of four castes and thirty-six sub-castes. Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Sudra constitute the four castes in Nepal. Caste plays a huge role in the day-to-day activities of the human life as the concept of caste is based on the occupation practiced by the people. At present, there is change in the perception of caste and caste-based occupation which is causing problem and challenging the traditional norms. This research aims to know the causes for the change in the scenario of the caste-based occupation in Nepal and its effects focusing mainly on the garment industry of the Tuladhar community. In-depth interviews, ethnography and with the support of secondary sources, study was done. Mainly seven factors viz. remittance, rent business, changing status quo of the patriarchal society, centralization in Kathmandu valley, conventional and orthodox working style, change in the opportunity structure, and spirit of entrepreneurship are the reasons for the change in the caste-based occupation. This research study has important practical and theoretical implications for the academicians, researchers, policymakers, and government. |
