AbstractThe Taipei Rapid Transit Systems (TRTS) project is one way of resolving the Taipei city traffic problems. The TRTS project involves civil, electrical, mechanical, trackwork and the other special professional constructors, resu lting in an internal interface among them. Furthermore, since the TRTS project is carried out in the heart of the central city, an external interface occurs too with its impact on traffic, utilities relocation, land use, etc. Therefore to reduce the interference from outside parties, and obtain sufficient information for construction from the parties who are involved in the project, communication and coordination has become a major task in the progress of the project. In ord er to understand how the client requests the contractor to carry out this task successfully, the resea rch examined the (a) contractual documents, (b) planning and scheduling, (c) organization, and (d) process and control of communication and documentation through a case study on the only super contract in the TRTS project which involves fourteen independent construction contracts, to present some aspects of the interface management system. Finally, the research made recommendations for action and further study.
