Abstract | The insufficient infrastructure construction expenditure in the last decade had dragged Taiwan's global competitiveness. While the government try make it up within a short period, the fluctuate demand will cause strong impacts on the industry if the government doesn't plan properly and hold a consistent policy in a long-term view. This study tries to propose some strategy considerations for a construction firm in Taiwan. In order to perform well, the firm must compete in settings in which the key success factors match the firm's distinctive competence or strength. First, the industry environment is surveyed, market threats and opportunities are also assessed. The market segments which most demanding and catering to the case company, transportation and environmental protection segments in this study, are selected. To have a clear picture, a survey to the focal company's top and middle management are conducted on a quantified scale to identify the critical factors in the industry comparing to the weight of the company's strength and weakness. The result shows that BES Engineering Corporation, the second largest construction firm in Taiwan, with the support from government had achieved strong market position but was lack of autonomy. A capability building on the aspect of client-orientation is needed to help it adapt oneself to the increasingly competitive market situation. |
