AbstractA great deal has been written and spoken about Electronic Data Interchange(EDI) for this decade. Most existing literature are based on case studies from many developed countries. They gave varying aspects for EDI system implementation. Now, Thailand should respond to this emerging trend. Retail business is one potential sector where EDI can be implemented because of growth expansion and stiff business competition. Despite the fact that EDI resulted to a lot of benefits, the Thai retail business is hesitant to go on this direction. The research attempts to study the feasibility of EDI system in retail business in Thailand. The survey and interviews showed the current situation of retail business in Thailand and the difficulties encountered regarding EDI implementation. The case study on MAKRO's order purchasing system has shown the benefits of EDI against the present system being used which include the reduction of lead time, administrative attention, paper usage and potential errors. On a wider scale, the use of EDI will result to reduction in inventory, improve customer service and cash management, and increase the competitiveness.
