Abstract | Information technology (IT) is changing the way companies operate. It is affecting the entire process by which companies create their products. Furthermore, it is reshaping the product itself: the entire package of physical goods, services and information that companies provide to create value for their business. Information technology now a days is changing at a very high pace. The cost of information storage, manipulation and transmittal are falling rapidly and the boundaries of what is feasible in information processing are at the same time expanding. This technological transformation is expanding limits of what companies can do faster than manager can explore opportunities. Information technology has spread to the banking and financial services sectors m the developing countries. While improving management information, credit supervision, and monitoring systems of financial markets and institutions within countries, information technology also allowed rapid and secured links with the global economy. However, banks in most of the developing countries lack the abilities to use IT so as to gain maximum advantage from its use. There have been many factors that are considered to mar the effective use of information technology in the developing country banks. Prominent among these are external factors like the government policies, unavailability of basic infrastructural utilities like telecommunication, power, etc., unhealthy competition in the banking industry, and some organizational factors among which IT illiteracy, management perception towards computerization and slow adaptability to change are the considered to be the most important. This study revolves around looking into the factors that affect the effective implementation of information technology in the banking industry in Pakistan. For this one of the nationalized commercial banks namely United Bank Limited (UBL) has been studied as a case. The factors that play a key role in the effective use of IT for competitive advantage in banking are taken into account and their impact is studied on the organization. The research focused on some factors that are facilitating or hindering the effective implementation of information technology in the bank. |
