AbstractDue to the entry of new banks and other non-bank finance companies in recent years, the commercial banks in Nepal have to face stiff competition today. Bearing this in mind, the present study tries to look at the possibility of information technology (IT) deployment in the banks to face competition. The potential of the use of various IT products in the Nepalese banking industry is determined by analyzing the various factors hindering IT deployment, and the competitive opportunities provided to the banks by IT deployment. Data for this purpose were collected from six out of the nine commercial banks in operation in Nepal, from the central bank (Nepal Rastra Bank), from IT vendors, from Nepal Telecommunications Corporation, and from bank customers through interviews and questionnaires. This involved visits to Kathmandu (the capital), Nepalgunj (a major town in Western Nepal), and Biratnagar (a major industrial city in Eastern Nepal). Secondary sources of data were also accessed. The study reveals that the IT component sophistication and IT technological capabilities, whether of the banks or of the IT vendors, are concentrated mainly in the capital Kathmandu valley, and all the factors hindering IT deployment were prominent in parts of the country other than the capital and few other cities in the Eastern half of the country. A comparison between the government banks and the foreign joint venture banks show that the latter have a higher level of IT component sophistication and superior IT technological capabilities, and the potential of the various IT products being used by them is higher. The analysis shows that the IT products for banking have, at the maximum, a moderate potential for their use in the capital and few other economically active cities, whereas they have very low or negligible potential for their use in the rest of the country; and so they have, at the maximum, low potential of use in the national perspective. IT banking products like the EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at the Point of Sales) has a very low potential, and the ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) has a low potential of use, even in the capital city.
