AbstractA novel optical fiber transmission system using the hybrid digital 2-level PAM and analogue PWM technigue is proposed. It can simultaneously transmit two-channel signals over the common optical fiber in a cost-effective and bandwidth conservation fashion. The analogue signal is transmitted by using the pulse width modulation, while the digital signal is encoded in the amplitude axis of the analogue PWM pulse stream. That is a high-level amplitude corresponds to a data bit "l" sent, whereas a low-level amplitude corresponds to a data bit "O" sent. The performance of the system is evaluated by considering SNR of 50 dB (for video communications) and BER of 10ยท 9 (for digital communications) as the lower bound. The results show that the system can perform better than the required lower bound. The proposed digital 2-level PAM and analogue PWM systems can be also used to transmit the multiplexed digital (e.g., TDM) signal and analogue FDM signal simultaneously, which can be potentially suitable for future multimedia applications.
