AbstractThis study presents an investigation into the link performance of a TDMA sectorized cellular system employing perfect power control, frequency hopping and discontinuous transmission. Two criteria of link performance are presented: signal-to-interference ratio considerations and traffic considerations. For signal-to-interference ratio computations for both up-link and down-link cases with various cluster sizes with different sectorization schemes are considered where the transmission is subjected to an inverse fourth power path loss law and lognormal shadowing. For traffic capacity and spectrum efficiency computations we considered a TDMA system using GSM specifications. It is found that sectorization improves signal-to-interference ratio for all practical cluster sizes, and, if different cluster sizes are considered, sectorization provides higher traffic capacity and higher spectrum efficiency than that of without sectorization case. Six sector system performs better than three sector and without sectorization configurations.
