Abstract | Flexible manufacturing systems are used to achieve better productivity with desired level of quality. However their introduction entails a variety of planning and control problems, which have proved resistant to exact solution. Recently extensive effort has been focused on the application artificial intelligence technique (Al) to those problems. The optimal tool set selection problem is one such problem which needs to be solved in order to achieve the goals of Flexible Manufacturing Systems. In order to select the tool grades which needs the heuristic knowledge of the manufacturing engineer rather than any algorithmic approach, a tool selection expert system has been developed. For selection of the feasible insert set for a operation set first the feasible insert geometries are calculated and feasible inserts are searched out from the insert database. Due to maintain a collision free environment a collision detection module has been integrated to check any possible interference between the work piece and machine. The visualization module is also integrated to check the workpiece shape visually. The generated operation-tool incidence matrix has been fed to the neuralnetwork optimizer to obtain the optimal tool set. Majority of the past research did not consider multiple objective while optimization and tool planning problem in totality. The present research is an effort in this direction. |
