AbstractThis research study attempts to find out the root causes of faults and critical variables influencing conformance quality in the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assembly industries in the developing countries. PCB assembly industry is often characterized as labor intensive. For this reason, many PCB assembly companies are being operated in the developing countries to exploit cheap labor. Similar to any electronics assembly industry, the competitiveness of PCB assembly companies are mainly determined by conformance quality (reject rates) as well as cost. Cost competitiveness is relatively easier to attain by exploiting cheap labor, while quality competitiveness is a more challenging area since quality mind of developing countries is far behind than that of the developed countries. Conformance quality is positively related to the cost. Thus quality competitiveness means cost competitiveness in the PCB assembly industries of the developing countries. Recent quality management literature have emphasized the total management involvement to attain high quality. However in developing countries, industry total organizational involvement is not easy work due to lack of general quality management concept. ยท This research, starting from investigating the every potential quality management variables based on the comprehensive literature review, has developed conceptual framework for quality auditing in the PCB assembly process and analyzed critical factors determining conformance quality based on in-depth case study. The result of this research is expected to help the quality engineer or process engineer in any electronics assembly company to solve their quality related problems.
