AbstractThe economic environment of the Indochinese countries has altered dramatically in just a few short years. Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam have all moved away from centrally-controlled to free-market, free-enterprise economies and will constitute on attractive, stable market place for both products and services in the future. The Royal Thai Government believes Thailand's geographic location and long-time relations with the Indochinese status put it in an excellent position to serve as a financial centre to support trade, investment, and production in this region. To develop Thailand to be a regional financial center Bangkok International Banking Facilities (BIBF) was announced by Thai government on September 16, 1992. The launching of BIBF leads to the liberalization of banking sectors in Thailand which will be lead to the intensely competitive financial market. Therefore, Thai banks should be prepared to cope with new competitive environment. This research study discussed the current operations of BIBF banks and analyzed the impact of BIBF. The results are provided the positive and negative impacts in operating BIBF of Thai banks based on foreign banks. Foreign banks have competitive edge over Thai banks mainly in state-of-the-art technology, skilled expertise and foreign customers. In addition, it is also provided the suitable course of actions of Thai banks in the future.
