Abstract | This study considers the problem of optimizing placement of workers in production lines where throughput is highly influenced by the workers' level of learning. A multiattribute analysis, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, of the production management problems confronting the company under study revealed that learning-related workers' problem is the most crucial in productivity enhancement. The approach then continues with categorizing the workers into "experienced" and " inexperienced", and deriving the learning curves for each category according to the type of work stations and the nature of work operations pe1formed therein. The learning characteristics are taken as inputs to the mathematical optimization models: single-objective model (Model I) and bi-objective model (Model II). A computer software package, called LINDO (Linear !Nteractive Discrete Optimizer) is used to solve these problems. Sensitivity analysis was done to find sets of alternative combinations of workers. A model comparison is discussed by using a linear regression analysis, while Statgraphics software package was used to determine the parameters. The models developed are applied to a real-life problem facing a shoe manufacturing firm. The production system consists of three departments namely, cutting, stitching and assembly. Since stitching has been found to be the bottleneck in this particular case, the line considered in this application belongs to the stitching stage. Results have revealed a significant potential improvement in productivity when using the models as compared to the existing practice. |
