AbstractThe main task of production planning is to use limited resources efficiently to reach the objectives of a company as close as possible. A lot of production planning models have been presented, each of them is aimed in a specific production environment and has its own assumptions. Goal programming approach is used in this study in developing a production planning model which is aimed at the application in a job shop system with bottleneck machines. The model is formulated with two main functions: determine the bottleneck machines and find out a feasible plan. In this study, the products fall into three categories, namely new product, export product and general product. Seven goals were considered in the model. The model was solved using Sequential Linear Goal Program Algorithm through XA package.ยท All variables were considered as continuous variables. The data from the selected company is used to illustrate the application and test the proposed model. The results show that the proposed model is efficient in such a production system and the solution is very sensitive to the goal level and the goal structures. The sensitivity analysis gives insights to decision makers the trade-off among conflicting goals. The analysis of the results leads to the identification of the bottleneck machine that restrict productivity; for getting the goals, the bottleneck should be properly managed. The application of the proposed model will help in managing production with respect to scheduling with a view to minimizing the number of bottleneck machines.
