Abstract | The development of advanced automobile technologies has made it necessary to develop or apply new manufacturing techniques to emerging product designs. This techniques require the use of Computer-Aided Design and Computer -Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software and hardware as tools to increase productivity and reduce development time. This study is an application of the CAD/CAM strategy in the development of a tire mold master. The Unigraphics ( UG ) software available in the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory was utilized to develop the mold master based on engineering drawings and specifications of a sample tire. In the CAD phase, modeling was done through the use of the interactive abilities of the software as well as through the development of a modeling program with the Graphic Interactive Programming Language module of UG. The data points are mapped on the profile surface and a pattern is developed based on the relations of the data coordinates. The CAM module was then used to develop the tool paths for the machining phase. The geometric model of the mold master was machined in three stages. The first stage included the conversion of the blank block of material into the appropriate tire profile surfaces and mold master surfaces. The second stage was the finish machining of the tire profile surfaces. The third stage consisted of the machining of the groove sections which made up the tire tread. The tool paths source file from the UG software had to be postprocessed, using the UG preprocessor and the MAHO postprocessor from the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL), to create the correct Numeric Control ( G-code ) program used in the MAHO 600E 5-axis machining center. The final product was of good su1face quality, however there are some restrictions on the use of machine tools in cutting the mold master. |
