Abstract | Tourism in KYNP is an industry with environmental impacts just like any other industry. Until it redefines its role, it should be considered as a polluting industry . The study identified and grouped tourism development problems and issues in KYNP as the following: natural resource deterioration, low tourist's satisfaction, low environmental awareness of visitors, low local people's involvement and weak coordination with other agencies . If tourism is to play a part in the new approach of sustainable tourism, it must become an active partner in promoting an understanding and appreciation of environmental conservation and how the tourist and local people are part of them. Ecotourism development is proposed as leading to management of all resources in KYNP in such a way that both the tourists and local people can fulfil educational , recreational, aesthetic and economic needs while maintaining ecological process and biological diversity . Adopting SPRING Development Planning Approach as the main methodology, the study tried to provide a planning framework for ecotourism development i n KYNP by focusing four main issues i.e., minimizing negative environmental impact, maximizing local people's benefit, promoting environmental awareness o f visitors, and tourist facilities and services improvement. Conservation of natural resources in KYNP should be intensified so that ecological diversity of the park can be assured. Tourists visiting the park should be encouraged to be more ' qualified ' tourists, while the park should also provides better service and opportunity for the tourists. The needs of local people should be taken into account so that they are not marginalised or criminalised by conservation measures. Finally, it should be recognized that ecotourism is a multy-party endeavour. By its very nature, ecotourism can never be expected radically to transform the tourism industry in KYNP. Its success will depend on t h e relationship and coordination of the park authority with other agencies. Notes 1 1. This Research Study was completed as part of the requirements for the SPRING (As i a ) Program. SPRING, a n acronym for Spatial Planning for Region sin Growing Economies, i s an M.Sc . programme jointly offered by AIT and t he University of Dortmund, Germany . Under the SPRING Programme , a Rese arc h Study carrying 12 cred its must be conceptualized a nd completed within only one term, i .e. from 1st May to 31st July . Preferably , t he topic should be related to t he preceding district development works hop . The SPRING Program thus differs from other M. Sc. programmes at AIT where most students write a thesis which spans at least e ight months . 2 . Professor Volker Kreibich (University o f Dortmund, Germany) attended t he final examinations of the SPRING (Asia) students in August 1995. |
