Abstract | The study comprised two phases, in the first phase, fry (range 0.49 -1.82 g) of African catfish (Cf arias gariepinus) were exposed in the immersion solution of selected antibiotics viz. chloramphenicol (@ 20 mg/L), chloramine-T (@ 20 mg/L), ampicillin (@ 1 O mg/L) and oxytetracycline (@ 20 mg/L) for an hour daily for 5 days in the cylindrical plastic containers (25 cm depth and 25 cm diameter) at the stocking density of 200 fry per container. The survival rates during exposure, ranged from 47.8 to 70.7%, were insignificant (P>0.05). In the second phase, the treated fry were nursed for 30 days in hapa installed in an earthen pond at a stocking density of 50 fishm-3 • Catfish fingerlings were fed with floating pelleted diet at satiation level. The differences in Mean survival rate, daily weight gain (DWG), specific growth rate (SGR) and food conversion ratio (FCR) values between the control group and any treatment group were statistically insignificant (P>0.05). After nursing 30 days, the survival rate ranged was found to be ranged from 30 to 61 %, DWG ranged from 0.41 to 0.68 g/fish/d, SGR ranged from 7.5 to 8.8%, and FCR ranged from 1.34 to 1.61. |
