AbstractResearch and development is considered to be a major source for growth and change in all societies. Thus managing research and development(R&D) organizations and focusing on their productivity and excellence is of great importance. Managing an R&D organization, is essentially the art of integrating the efforts of diverse, creative, and intelligent and autonomous individuals. However, in managing R&D organizations and focusing on their productivity presents unique problems and unusual challenges. This research study deals with a study of the R&D management practices in Government Research Institutes of Sri Lanka. An analytical framework has been developed for the purpose of assessing the R&D management practices in Government Research Institutes. In order to develop the analytical framework a comprehensive literature review was carried out. Based on the analytical framework a questionnaire was developed to assess the R&D management practices adopted by the ·Government Research Institutes. Using this questionnaire several Government Research Institutes were surveyed. Based on the findings the usage of R&D management practices in Government Research Institutes are discussed. Recommendations are then suggested for overcoming the weaknesses in the management practices adopted by the R&D institutes.
