AbstractSolutions to transportation problems and improvements to transportation facilities and services can reasonably be developed after the magnitude, location and extent of the problems or the need for improvements are well understood. This study is an exploratory research towards the integration of fuzzy concepts and GIS-based road network analysis, to handle the general lack of precision in the data. The contributions of this work also include, the capabilities and limitations of GIS, which is considered to be the potential technology for transportation. FCM, a fuzzy clustering algorithm, is detailed and methods to execute a program (such as, C program) within the GIS were also dealt, during the demonstration of integrated system. It is expected that tuning-in-tune with the realistic situations, this model will address comprehensively to the much-needed requirement for general purpose vehicle routing system capable of handling truly real-life environments.
