AbstractThe study attempt to identify various determinant factors of capital structure and the nature of their impact in the developing country perspectives. The study based on the information published by the companies listed in The Colombo Stock Exchange. Today, the duty of the private sector is emphasized, as the most appropriate way for the development of a country. The growing demand for funds cannot be made by equity capital alone. Debt is therefore an external components in determining the growth of a firm. It is important for financial manager to know how much debt should be used, so as to optimize the firm value. The identification of the factors which determine the optimum debt level is therefore more useful. There are many theoretical and empirical studies which have reviewed the various aspect of corporate capital structure. However these studies mainly based on the developed country environment. The basic objectives of this exploitative investigation is to identify the determinants of capital structure and their impact over firms' debt financing on the developing country perspectives. The study only covers the data available in financial reports. Hence the study attempted to cover the quantitative aspect of debt financing using statistical analysis. The results of the study have clarified the variation of the different determinant factors in different sectors. It provides a guidance to corporate financial managers (Specially in Sri Lanka) to identify the factors and possible outcome of the financing decisions.
