AbstractIn recent years, Vietnam economy is changing towards a market-oriented economy and that puts up new demands on the Vietnam insurance industry. But the Vietnam insurance industry, constituted of a sole, state-owned insurance company (BAOVIET) has been remained almost unchanged. Related to the role of insurance in economic life of every country that states: "A sound insurance industry is a vital component in a country's transition from undeveloped to developed. At its best, it can be the engine of such transition." Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the role of Vietnam insurance in the contributions to the economic development of the country in the recent years as compared to the French insurance industry. The issuance of the Decree of Vietnam Government on Insurance Business has opened the door to Vietnam insurance market. It will demolish the monopolistic position of BAOVIET in Vietnam insurance industry. Hence, other objectives of this study is to find some solutions, or to make some recommendations BAOVIET, in particular, and the Vietnam insurance industry in general, might make use of, to help itself getting ready to operate in the competitive environment.
