AbstractA great deal has been written concerning the innovation management in Small and Medium Sized firm's in the developed country context. In Newly Industrialized Countries(NIC's) and Less Developed Countries (LDC's) contexts such work is limited. As an exploratory study, this research study aims at comparative analysis between the management framework developed by Small and Medium Sized firm's in Korea (a NIC) and India (a LDC) to promote product innovations. Thus the focus of this study is towards management of industrial products innovations in the NI C's and LDC's context. It was found that all the firms were simultaneously involved in product and process innovations, however with different degrees of dominance of each innovation type. Based on these criteria two strategic types of young cable manufacturing firms were identified; a) The innovative product dominant firms, b) The process dominant firms. According to the findings of this research, similar management frameworks and organizational characteristics were found between young Small and Medium Sized product dominant firms manufacturing cables in India and Korea, under differing degree of environmental complexity and stability. These findings indicate that environmental factors may not have a significant impact on the product innovativeness of a firm if, the firm is very young and market innovativeness is very low. Considering this fact the author has proposed a model for strategic and more systematic management of new-product development in Small and Medium sized firms.
