| Abstract | Competitive advantage is at the heart of a firm’s performance in competitive markets. It determines to a great extent the profitability and growth of a firm. One of the principle drivers of competitive advantage is technological change. There are many examples in the literature which show how technological change has helped in gaining as well as eroding competitive advantage. This study attempts to study how a specific company -Thai Bridgestone Co., Ltd. achieves competitive advantage through management of activities in the value chain and what is the role of technology in achieving competitive advantage. One important aspect of this research is the company itself It is a Japanese-Thai joint venture, and the parent company in Japan play a major role in the running of the joint venture. Thus, a study of this joint venture can also provide insights into how Japanese companies are managed for competitiveness. The framework for the study has been derived based on a comprehensive literature survey of competitive advantage and strategy and the impact of technology in view. Most of the information has been obtained from the company's top management for this research. Lessons learnt are presented based on this case study and some recommendations are made to Asian managers for improving competitive advantage of their firms. |
