Abstract | Irrigated agriculture development project plays an important role in the economic development of a country. They supply basic raw material for the industries which in turn produce the value added products. Due to the increasing demand of water much more emphasis is given to large irrigation projects. These development projects have many environmental and economic consequences. In most of the developing countries EIA has become a pre-requisite for most of the big irrigation projects as they produce environmental impact like salinity, waterlogging, soil erosion and health impacts in the later stages of the projects which reduces overall sustainable benefits of project. Very littile research has been unde1iaken which incorporates environmental aspects in the overall economic benefits. This study attempts to evaluate the economic and environmental impacts of an irrigation project collectively. The analysis of the situation shows that the project has good economic impacts on the farming community of the local people. However, it has also been uncovered that the environmental impacts like salinity and nutrient removal by sugar cane and rice have been arisen due to the irrigation. According to the study future scenario if this problem is not addressed and shielding measures are not taken immediately the net financial benefits in the long run would be reduced and the poor farmers have to outlast these environmental costs of the project instead of getting benefits. It has been revealed from the study that the greater effort has to be directed to assessing the environmental impacts together with the economic impacts . |
