Abstract | Since the implementation of open door policies several years ago, more and more foreign companies have been set up either as Joint ventures or fully foreign- ownedenterprises in Vietnam, especially in HCM City. They are employing more than ten thousand workers . However, in the relations between foreign investors and local government as well as local managers and employees have encountered, human resources management is one of the most essential and complex issues. Failures in joint ventures happen because of lack of infrastructure, the weakness of local administrative system, and especially the cross cultural misunderstanding in management. In this research, the main issues consisted the identification of HRM practices and performance of twenty foreign and twenty Vietnamese managers in joint ventures to give a general HRM profile in JVs in HCM City. This study also included a quantitative analysis in which the effects of cultural differences in organizations are compared for both partners. The findings show that there exists some differences in Vietnamese perception on teamwork, although their characteristics are grouped oriented. There also exist a lack of trust between Vietnamese managers and employees and foreign managers. These issues can only be solved by understanding cross cultural management. |
