AbstractNyquist filters are known to be important in digital transmission system since they can provide zero intersymbol interference. Depending on the application, Nyquist filters are implemented with two square root Nyquist filter by splitting them into transmitreceiver filter pairs. This filtering techniques are widely used in U.S. digital cellular system. In this paper, main emphasis is on the design of square root Nyquist digital filters m presence of analog reconstruction and anti-aliasing filters. The application of optimization techniques in filter design is discussed. This method is based on the computation of constrained optimization problems. The proposed design procedure is general enough to incorporate both time- and frequency-domain constraints. This paper also introduces the procedure for testing and estimating the performance of these filters. A practical computer program is given based on the design of square root raised cosine filter with Butterworth lowpass filter as the prototype of analog filter. The performance of these filters is presented. The testing signal is n/4-shifted-DQPSK sequence. The intersymbol interference results are provided by the root mean square (RMS) values of vector errors at symbol ~oints and at middle symbol points. The factors affecting results are analyzed.
