Abstract | An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dissolved oxygen concentration on growth performance of seabass (Lates calcarifer) for 49 days in fresh water. Three tanks in each of three treatments were maintained at dissolved oxygen levels of 4.6 ppm, 2.6 ppm, and a control treatment with continuous air supply. Fingerling seabass with average length of 14.8 cm and weight of 50.6 g were stocked in 500 liter cylindrical concrete tanks at a density of 20 fish per tank with constant water flow of 0.8 l/min . The control and 4.6 ppm treatments produced no significant differences in final individual fish weight, specific growth rate, daily weight gain or food conversion ratio. The quantities were all significantly different for fish in I he 2.6 ppm treatment (p <0.05). For the control, 4.6 ppm and 2.G ppm treatments, the final individual weights (Mean±SE) were 115.1±9 .9, 108 .6±13 . 12 and 79.8±2 . 28 g respectively. The daily weight gains were 1.33±0.20 , 1.19±0.28 and 0 .62±0.03 g/fish/day. The specific growth rate were 1.69±0.17, 1.56±0.26 and 0.97±0 .0 3 %/day Food conversion rate were 1. 74±0.17, 1. 76±0 . 51 and 2.58±0.06. Survival rate was 100% in all treatments. These results indicate that variation in the dissolved oxygen between 4.6- 2.6 ppm significantly effect the growth performance of seabass . |
