Abstract | Experiment was conducted on Agricultural system teaching farm at AIT campus from 10 January 1994 - 2 May 1994. The main objectives of the study was to know effect of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer and cutting frequency on performance of the Guinea grass. Thus four levels of CAN was used as nitrogen base at the rate of 0, 400, 600, 800 kg N hayr·1 and TSP was applied as phosphorus base at 200 kg P hayr·1 for all nitrogen levels. The four cutting frequencies were once .in 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 8 weeks. The pasture was watered once a week. Nitrogen%, phosphorus%, and crude fiber% of grass were analyzed to see the grass's quality. Both effect of high fertilizer and short cutting interval increased the nitrogen% of the grass up to 3.6% and reduced the crude fiber% of plant up to 26.5%. Both fertilizer and cutting interval had negative effect on phosphorus content of the herbage and its range is 0.15 - 0.35% in DM of the grass. Cumulative total yield of the grass in terms of fresh weight and dry matter yield were significantly increased with increasing level of nitrogen fertilizer. Combination of 800 kg N hayr·1 at 6 week cutting interval yielded 41.5 t ha·1 and 10.8 t ha·1 in terms of biomass and dry matter yield respectively during the experimental period. |
