AbstractUrban design is a special discipline or process of urban planning orientated towards urban physical space creation through three-dimensional design to enhance the living environment functionally and aesthetically. Urban centre streets play a very important role in city activities; therefore they are most important in urban design. This study reviews the origins of city centre street design and its evolution through the history of city planni ng in China. Special emphases is put on analysing the developments with regard to city centre street design during the last ten years. Based on a review of foreign literature, several case studies in China, and the author's own experience in this field, criteria for good city centre street design are developed. The analysis is supported by the results of structured conversations with planning experts as well as interviews with people in the street. As a result, the study offers guidelines for improved city centre street design.
