Abstract | The study attempts at understanding two different and yet similar types of beef cattle project s, namely the Green Isan and Military - BAAC, in the context of Northeastern Thailand, in terms of their impact and benefits to their respective target groups. The importance of livestock as a supplementary source of income in the rural economy of Thailand can hardly be over-emphasized. But over the years, livestock as a capital stock is becoming less and less affordable by the smaller farmers. The government and other concerned agencies are ma king conscious effort at reversing this trend. However, the study shows that t he general problem of designing project for s mall farmers is pronounced in this sector too. The gap between the stated objectives and the actual performance of these two projects leaves much to be desired. The economic performance of the two projects is discouraging, even though the Military-BAAC project unlike the Green Isan is not beyond r e d emption. Th e study brings out the importance of planning these projects with an eye to the realities of the context through economic and problem analysis. |
