Abstract | Employment, an income earning source, is a key factor in economic development. Lack of employment opportunities in the developing countries in general, and in their rural and remote areas in particular, is a common phenomenon all over the world. In such state of affairs, promotion of rural small-scale household industries is recognised as an important strategy for generating employment and thus income earning sources for the people . In the context of northeastern Thailand, si lkweaving household industry - a centuries old traditional handicraft - has the apparent potential for promotion as a commercial enterprise, especially in favour of women workers. The present study is an attempt to highlight the potential and prospects of silkweaving household industry with a broad objective of ·exploring income and appropriate employment generation sources for the small farm households, particularly women. The study is mainly based on the "SPRING, Workshop ", (Rapid Rural Appraisal Survey, October December, 1992 ) . However, specific questionnaire and semi - structured interviews are also used. The problems of the silkweaing household industry have been analysed from various perspectives. The study reveals that, besides limited marketing facilities, there is a serious lack of entrepreneurship development among women of the area. Therefore, entrepreneurship development has been identified as an appropriate strategy, supported by some more general and specific recommendations for the promotion of this industry. |
