AbstractThe study attempted to assess villagers's perception of forest conservation and to measure the level of people's participation in forest management at Dong Yai 2 Forest Village, Pa Kham District, Buriram Province. Weighted Index system, cross tabulation and correlation are used to measure the relationship between perception and participation. The relationship between these two parameters was positive and in moderate level. The relationship between household income and participation was analyzed by comparing average income and income distribution frequency with participation index. Neither average income nor income distribution frequency showed the same trend as participation index. There was hardly found any relationship between income and people's participation in forest management. The conflict between forest conservation, people livelihood and commercial forest was also discussed. Some form of forestry management was proposed, giving priority to a balance between people's livelihood and forest conservation. The forms can include social forestry. agroforestry and a well-functioning· community forest. At the same time, people's participation in these forms of forestry management as well as in mono-plantations in commercial forest could be modified. An envisaged future forest management model was proposed based on contract principle either with the community. on individual basis or through non-government organizations (NGO). The model is especially applicable in the replantation of degraded forest and maintenance of replanted areas as well as the existing forest cover.
