Abstract | PET plastics contributed to the big portion to end up to the open environments. Returning them to use as recycled feedstocks is widely considered since PET plastics itself has high potential to come out as the energy or material., Thailand considers to legitimate rPET and propose “Closed loop recycling” for sustainable plastic waste management, even though Thai regulation on PET recycling for food container still not allow. If the according regulation was in place for use, it would be potential to come up with new business practices which can come up with many impacts and opportunities. Interview session with 5 national companies and secondary data review on current global practices of PET recycling are conducted in this study to assess the potential of PET recycling business in this country by using SWOT analysis tool, then suggesting the promising business model of Circular Economy which suits to Thai context by using Gap analysis and improvement tools. Findings from this study shows that the trends of PET recycling business market in Thailand have potential to grow similarly to global trends. The market in Thailand now is quite competitive since the demand of PET bottles for feedstocks is lower than the total capacity of PET recycling in the country for 28.7 – 34.9%. The key result SWOT and Gap analysis shows that Thailand do need to have a strong support from governments in terms of waste management, economic support, and regulatory environment. EPR approach is one of the recommended solutions to apply and it needs to systematically connect throughout the PET recycling supply chains to show the circular economy for PET recycling. |
