AbstractA fundamental characteristic of a multidatabase system is the autonomy of the participating database systems. The autonomy requirements have a profound effects on the ability of a multidatabase system to support atomic global transaction. In a multidatabase system, a local system may choose to delay a global transaction or even refuse its execution. This would delay the completion of a multidatabase transaction or would inhibit its success. The flexible global transaction model increases the failure resiliency of a global transactions by allowing alternative subtransaction to be executed when a local database fails or a subtransaction ab01ts. In this thesis, the execution model of global transactions in a multidatabase environment is presented and then a subset of flexible global transactions that can be executed in an error-prone multidatabase environment is defined. We also propose a semantic commit protocol for defined subset of flexible global transactions.
