AbstractCurrent GISs are tending more and more to be integrated with raster and vector data. Two improved algorithms for the data inter-conversion between vector and raster formats are designed and described. In the design of the algorithm in raster to vector conversion, greater emphasis is put on the extraction of full topologies from an image. The vector to raster conversion algorithm was focused on solving the sorting problem and reducing execution time. Both alg01ithms used the scan_line techniques. Implementation have been carried out on conversions between DLG Optional vector files and 8 bit raster image files. Expe1iments are made to test the effectiveness of these algorithms and the results were evaluated and analyzed with c1iteria of quality, accuracy and efficiency for the special considerations in the field of GIS. These are followed by conclusions of the inter-conversion process and some recommendations for further works in data integration in GIS.
