AbstractRapid economic developement couples with the advent of COVID-19 pandemic have introduced an unprecedented surge in the volume of plastic waste in Vietnam. This turn of event requires an updated outlook on the current situation of Vietnam’s plastic waste management, as once another unexpected event happens, Vietnam can be as prepared as possible. The study showed detailed description of legal framework, which serves as the back bone of plastic management in Vietnam. The central government in the capital envisioned a strategy on dealing with plastic waste, which would then be carried out by various supporting agencies in varied levels. Except for the incentives to encourages plastic and energy recovery, the implemented policies still have few successes in effective plastic waste management, since the currently employed plastic waste treatment methods are still insufficient and inferior in term technology. The landscape of plastic recycling in Vietnam is predominantly controlled by the informal sector, nominally craft village. Plastic waste recycling and plastic material recovery are mainly carried out by establishment in craft village. Their products share the same characteristics such as low value and inferior quality. In addition to that, various environmental consequences can be estimated from the prolonged operation. The projected rise in the generation of plastic waste in Vietnam require actions from all stakeholders within the plastic waste management system. In the 2 developed scenarios, which include both short-term and long-term targets, fundamental construction and the shift in the people’s behavior are essential. Moreover, there are instances of innovation, which are under operation clearly indicate the path of development, which the plastic waste management is following.
