AbstractA testing method to measure the foundation dynamic stiffness through direct output only measurements of real structures is proposed and evaluated in this thesis. Dynamic stiffness is measured and presented as complex numbers in frequency domain, of which the real component is stiffness, and the imaginary component is damping coefficient. The testing method was applied on a floating pile-cap with 12 piles embedded in soft clay and a two degree of freedom steel super-structure. The foundation lateral translational stiffness was statically tested to compare with the measured translational dynamic stiffness. The foundation lateral translational fundamental frequencies were found by measuring the lateral impulse responses to compare with calculated fundamental frequencies based on measured static and dynamic translational stiffness. Conclusion based on results is the testing method of measuring foundation dynamic stiffness can accurately measure lateral dynamic stiffness and be used to find soil structure interaction parameters of real structures.
