AbstractTapioca is one of the most important root crops of the world. The production of starch from tapioca releases large amounts of waste water. Although there have been many researches on the environmental impacts of high levels of BOD and COD of waste water from tapioca starch industry, the toxicological effects of this type of waste water has not yet been carefully studied. This research is designed to study the toxicological effects of waste water from tapioca starch industry by using two toxicity tests: Duckweed and Microtox. In this study, toxicity of the incoming water and two types of waste water from a tapioca starch factory were determined. Samples of waste water before treatment showed high toxicity levels when test ed by both Microtox and Duckweed. Samples of waste water after treatment appeared to be nontoxic as test ed by Microtox , but they still revealed a toxicological effect when tested by Duckweed test. Incoming water samples, which were used as a reference, s howed no toxic effect at all. There is a close relation between level s of toxicity and total cyanide contents of the samples. Toxicity of these samples decreased significantly within seven days. As investigated by the research, toxicity of waste water from tapioca starch industry has a strongly harmful effect on aquatic organisms and vegetations of the surrounding environment of starch mills.
