AbstractThis research was conducted to compare the possible maximum accidental eccentricities with the code-based eccentricity, for the horizontal variation of mass and stiffness. For the purpose a 43 story nominally symmetric and torsionally sensitive structure was used. The variations of mass and stiffness were conducted independently, in terms of floor live load, flexural stiffness (EI) and compressive strength (E). Other than that, the effect infill wall stiffness (once considered), on accidental eccentricity was also observed. The contribution to accidental torsion from each variable was evaluated based on eccentricities. In the second phase a three-story structure with the same plan was designed and the variations were applied on the system to be compared with the code. It was observed that the accidental eccentricities for 43-story structure, when considered maximum possible variations did not reach the prescribed code limits, whereas for the 3-story structure it already did.
