AbstractMany proposals involving Directory service protocol have been made to improve its performance, or to simplify the protocol, or to add some other capability to the standard Directory protocol. This thesis is aimed to improve the performance of the Directory service protocol by reducing the cost of its yellow-pages service. An Index-server has been proposed to improve searching time through a distributed network of Directory services and at the same time to provide high-level search capability. An experimental prototype system has been implemented with OSI application development environment using ISO Development Environment (ISODE), OSI upper layer on top of TCP protocol.
