AbstractIn order to improve water filtration , which is one of the most important part of water treatment process, this study attempts to seek for an alternative filter to substitute the conventional sand filter. A dual media, comprise polypropylene and polystyrene, was used. The study was carried out in two scales. In the laboratory scale the optimum parameters were determined these parameters are the velocity of water through the media, the ratio of media composition, and the turbidity of the influent water. The pilot scale was, then, carried out at the actual water treatment plant. Water from the river was feeded in without sedimentation process. The comparisons were made between the dual media and the sand media. The result show that there is no difference of the water quality between the two media, but the headloss of the dual media is less than that of the sand media. The dual media also has its advantage that in backwashing process intermixing of the media does not occur while this phenomena occur in the sand filter.
