AbstractWater audit is a relatively new concept. Just as financial auditing, which deals with cash flows and balance sheets, a water audit involves an elucidation of water flows and balances. This study follows that concept and examines the water use pattern at Lever Brothers (Thailand) Ltd., a multi-national consumer goods producer with substantial water consumption. The study involves a complete inventory of the water supply and distribution system. It also included a brief description of water use in each of the factories. This is followed by a water meter testing and a water balance for the complex, making it possible to quantify the unaccounted for water escaping the system. Water quality parameters are reported. The study also demonstrates the use of computer model Steady in setting up a reference water balance for a unit, in this case the soap making and the glycerine plant. The need to save water was felt by the manager and worker alike. The results of the study reveal the water use of Lever Brothers (Thailand) to be environmentally satisfactory and praiseworthy. The water audit at Lever Brothers (Thailand), is a modest attempt to raise awareness towards the need to conserve water, and exercise utmost restraint and care in the use of this natural resource.
