AbstractThis research study titled “Key Factors Contributing to the Success in Sustainable Plastic Waste Management in Khung Bang Kachao, Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakan Province”, is a qualitative research aims to (1) explore the barriers affecting the development of plastic waste management in Khung Bang Kachao, (2) explore the factors affecting the success in motivating people in Khung Bang Kachao to develop plastic waste management practice and (3) explore best practice for sustainable plastic waste management in order to promote the concepts of 3Rs and circular economy in Khung Bang Kachao. This research study collected the primary data by in-depth interviewing with six local governments officers who involved in waste management, six environmental conservation leaders and two waste collection workers in Khung Bang Kachao, and participatory observation the local people. The research study's results are as follow. The behavior of waste management without segregation before disposal remains a critical problem that needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. Resulted in the key factors which interrupt the sustainable management of plastic waste in the Khung Bang Kachao are lack of awareness of the impact of mismanagement of waste and lack of incentives for waste classification. This includes the little income from plastic waste sorting for sale or exchange. In addition, the local authorities' insufficient budget for plastic waste management is also important barriers interrupting the development of plastic waste management in Khung Bang Kachao. The key factor contributing to the success of developing sustainable plastic waste management is to encourage people to pay more attention to waste segregation by establishing community waste banks in order to exchange waste for money or the building of a zero-Baht shop to invite people to exchange their plastic waste or recyclable waste to exchange for necessary items. In addition, the most important factor is the cooperation between the public and private sectors and people to reduce the generation of plastic waste and recycle plastic waste for further use as much as possible.
