AbstractThe experiments were conducted from September 1993 to February 1994.The best media suitable for attached growth biological reactors was chosen in this study. In Run I, low strength artificial river water containing ammonia 2.47 mg/l and BOD5 of 6.89 mg/l was introduced into a~l 3 reactors at HRT 3 hours. After one and half months opera t1on, loofa, coconut hu~k and charcoal media reactors give organic matter removals of 46.01%,52.93% and 42.86% respectively . Ammonia removal of loofa, coconut husk and charcoal were 99.75%,99.89% and 99.85% and Phosphate removal was 6.07%,6.74% and 6.4% respectively. In Run II on~ coconut husk media reactor was conducted under HRT 1 hour and two charcoal media reactors were conducted at HRT 1 hour and 2 hours low strength artificial river water containing ammonia 2.27 rng/l and BOD5 of 6.95 mg/l was introduced into all 3 reactors. After one and a half months operation coconut husk media operating at HRT 1 hour and charcoal media reactor operating at HRT 1 and 2 hours give organic matter removal of 43.77%, 38.86% and 41.56%. Ammonia removal was 99.87%, 99.68% and 99.95% and Phosphate removal was 9.36% , 9.81% and 4 . 28% respectively. In Run III high strength artificial river water containing ammonia 9.2 mg/1 and BOD 42.3 mg/l was introduced into each reactor, one coconut husk media reactor was operated at HRT 1 hour and two charcoal media reactors were operated at HRT 1 hour and 2 hours. After one month operation , coconut husk media operating at HRT 1 hour and charcoal media reactors which are operating at HRT 1 and 2 hours give BOD5 removal of 62.23%,60.88% and 67.68%. Ammonia removal of above three reactors are 26. 23%, 32. 36% and 84. 71%. Phosphate removal of the three reactors are 7.81%,9.73% and 8.61% respectively . The experimental observation revealed that loofa media has low duration because it decayed after one and a half month, coconut husk media imparts color. The best media is charcoal for organic and ammonia removal. The effect of HRT in the reactors showed that at higher HRT the charcoal and coconut husk media reactors obtain low removal rates than low HRT operating reactors. Percent reductions increase with high HRT. Effect of high and low concentrations in the reactors results if high concentration of influent was used removal rates increases. Percent reduction of BOD 5 gets high but for percent reduction of NH3 was low. It seems this biological aerated reactor using charcoal as -iii- media could be used to apply for a pilot scale to improve river water.
