AbstractThe purpose of this study is to examine the effects of cultural intelligence and trust on cooperation in Myanmar’s construction industry. This study discusses the mediating role of trust for the relationship between cultural intelligence and cooperation, which has been less explored in literature. This also is the first study that developed a comprehensive model to explain the level of cooperation in Myanmar construction industry. The data is collected by distributing questionnaires face-to-face and through email using google forms to engineers working in construction sector in Yangon, Myanmar. Altogether, 408 valid questionnaires have been received and used for the analysis purpose. The findings from SEM analysis suggest that trust fully mediates the relationship between cultural intelligence and cooperation only for with experience model. It can be said that cultural intelligence directly affects trust and that incrementally indirectly increases cooperation for this model. Furthermore, it was found that the level of cognition-based trust which is a dimension under trust for with experience is significantly higher than without experience model from independent sample t-test. The presence of cognition-based trust is important if we want to have better cooperation at the workplace since it can help individuals to improve professional relationships and enhance professional collaborations. Thus, trust did not mediate the relationship between cultural intelligence and cooperation for without experience model. Respondents with experience have higher CQ, show a higher level of trust and have better cooperation among their colleagues than those without experience. Finally, the study provides academic and managerial insights regarding cultural intelligence, cooperation, and trust with critical recommendations for the improvement of cooperation through cultural intelligence in construction sector.
